Youth-related movie endorsed to Baguio schools

City officials recently endorsed the screening for the city’s youth, the biographical film entitled Oscar M. Alcaras, Ang Boy Scout na Bayani and forwarding the same to all Department of Education schools within the city for their guidance and appreciation.

Under Resolution No. 166, series of 2024, local legislators stated that the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) issued a permit to exhibit theatrical on March 6, 2023 which will expire on March 6, 2028 and approved for public exhibition of the aforesaid biographical film with classification ‘G’ or general audience.

The council claimed that the biographical film titled Oscar M. Alcaras, Ang Boy Scout na Bayani was produced by producer Edgar Resurreccion of the ETR Fil Production and portrayed by actor and television host Buboy Villar featuring the first civilian to be given the honor of being laid to rest at the Libingan ng ng Bayani or heroes Cemetery in Fort Bonifacio, after displaying heroism in saving his drowning scout master during a reforestation project at the La Mesa dam in Novaliches, Quezon City, sacrificing his life in the process.

Alcaras was also awarded the coveted Presidential Medal of Merit on September 11, 1970 at the Malacanang Palace by former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr..

In a Memorandum dated July 26, 2023 from the Assistant Secretary for Operations Dr. Dexter A. Galvan, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Operations, Bureau of Learner Support Services, Department of Education, encouraged regional directors, school division superintendents, public elementary and secondary school heads, and all others concerned, to support the screening of the said film in schools, subject to existing rules and guidelines set forth by the education department.

The council pointed out that the said film aims to mold invaluable Filipino values in eager young minds by emulating Oscar M. Alcaras as a boy scout role model.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte in her message to further strengthen support for the screening of the biographical film hoped that by watching the film, young Filipino boys will appreciate the Filipino culture of caring for others and the scouting movement that continues to be a big part of the country’s youth development through the enduring partnership between the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and the education department.

The body stipulated that for school administrators and officers of public and private elementary and secondary schools in the city to screen the biographical film for their evaluation and approval for viewing in their respective schools. – Dexter A. See
