Seismic stratigraphy, as part of the barangay twin presentation discussed

Ongoing research on Seismic Stratigraphy could yield much information which enhances the climate change and city disaster risk reduction management office (CDRRMO) reports.

This is according to the City Planning Development and Sustainability Office (CPDSO) head Archt. Donna Rillera- Tabangin in a report on the barangay twin project during the management committee meeting last week at city hall.

The Seismic Stratigraphy research overlaid with the Community-based Monitoring System (CBMS) data and the spatial infrastructure analytics of the barangay digital twin project show probable local government unit actions during earthquakes.

As defined, Seismic stratigraphy is a method for studying sedimentary rocks in the deep surface, made possible by computer analysis.

However, the seismic stratigraphy study presents resonance factors; height of the building and energy dissipated from the earth’s inner parts which could cause the collapse of a structure in a given period of time.

In an earthquake, if the natural frequency of the ground matches that of the structure built on that ground, there is magnified or amplified motion of the structure, which may cause it to collapse.

This was methodically discussed by City Administrator Engr. Bonifacio De la Pena, who mentioned that the study is done through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the De la Salle University.

Represented by their numerical values, the structure’s position of safety as to number of storeys (N) is N/10; and the period to ease up the energy from the earth (0.1).

According to Tabangin, in case of a disastrous earthquake in a specific area, overlaid data from the CBMS shows if members of the vulnerable population are with the affected group.

Vulnerable groups may be Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), the elderly or a youthful population.

Emergency or additional subsistence or essentials may then be delivered to said area, Tabangin explained.
