Schools told to establish Gulayan sa Paaralan

City officials urged all public and private schools in the city to establish their respective Gulayan sa Paaralan in their compounds.

Under Resolution No. 561, series of 2022, city legislators stated that the establishment of the Gulayan sa Paaralan in the different public and private schools in the city would add beauty to the school and can serve as a source of livelihood, especially to those who have meager family income.

During the Scout Official for a Day (SOFAD) regular session held on November 7, 2022, the SOFAD Council adopted the proposal of SOFAD Councilor Ralph Gwyneth T. Sapdoy which urged all private and public schools in the city to establish Gulayan sa Paaralan in their respective schools.

Earlier, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) defined the impact of urban gardening as ‘an industry that produces, processes and markets food and fuel, largely in response to the daily demand of consumers within a town, city or metropolis, on land and water dispersed throughout the urban and peri-urban area, applying intensive production methods, using and re-using natural resources and urban waste, to yield a diversity of crops and livestock.’

The council asserted that vegetable gardens in educational institutions is clearly an innovative way of teaching students to value the importance of being resourceful and innovative in food source and livelihood.

The education department previously institutionalized the establishment of Gulayan sa Paaralan as one of the interventions that will guarantee food security and food sufficiency in their respective communities. – Dexter A. See
