Relocation of poles along sidewalks pushed
City officials reiterated the earlier request of the local government to the Cordillera office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-CAR) and the City Engineering Office (CEO) to coordinate and facilitate the clearing and relocation of all poles/posts located within the sidewalks in the city.
Under Resolution No. 426, series of 2022, local legislators pointed out that sidewalks were built, being repaired and maintained for safety of all the pedestrians, but poles/posts are seen occupying portions/spaces of the same in the different parts of the city which impede the smooth flow of traffic and posing hazard and inconvenience to people who are walking along the same who have to wait for their turn, go around the poles/posts or step down on the streets/roads to pass through the constricted sidewalks caused by the presence of the unrelocated poles/posts which need to be promptly and immediately relocated to the areas where it will not impede the flow of the pedestrians.
The council also requested the local chief executive to make a similar request to the concerned government agencies to facilitate the speedy implementation of the aforesaid resolution, especially in areas frequently traveled by students.
Earlier, the local legislative body previously adopted various measures for the immediate removal or relocation of electric poles/posts, dangling cable wires, and other obstructions within roads/streets and sidewalks in the different parts of the city.
Among the aforesaid measures previously adopted by the body include Resolution No. 350, series of 2022 that reiterated Resolution NO. 032, series of 2022 for all public utility companies operating in the city to remove all posts and other obstructions, especially on locations where tactile pavements are installed that are obstructing sidewalks, walkways which pose danger to the general public; Resolution No. 32, series of 2021 reiterating Resolution No. 140, series of 2018 and Resolution NO. 253, series of 2018 to the DPWH-CAR, the Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO, Inc. and the cable television, communication and other utility companies to remove or relocate electric poles/posts, dangling cable wires and other obstructions within the national government’s right-of-way as a result of road widening and other related projects in the city; Resolution NO. 391, series of 2021 requesting public utility companies operating in the city to remove their concrete posts that are obstructing sidewalks posing a danger to passersby; Resolution NO. 253, series of 2018 directing the various telecommunication companies to fix, relocate or remove their respective dangling cable wires and poles/posts along Legarda Road, Military Cut-off and Kennon road within 10 days from receipt of this resolution and Resolution NO. 140, series of 2018 declaring and adopting as policy of the city government of Baguio for utility poles and support structures by the Benguet electric Cooperative (BENECO), Inc., cable television, communication companies and industries and other utility companies be installed or relocated only in areas or locations duly identified for the purpose in coordination with the affected or concerned implementing agencies. – Dexter A.
