The Beneficiaries:
Barangay Abang, found in the municipality of Bucay in the province of Abra, has a total population of 752 as of the 2020 census. Among the 21 barangays that comprise the municipality, it is the sole barangay where the indigenous group “Inlaud” remains the majority. It is bound on the North by Barangay Tabiog and Palaquio, on the East by Barangay Bila-Bila of Sallapadan Municipality, on the South by Barangay Kimloong, Dugong and Patoc and on the West by Barangay Salnek and Madalipay. The barangay is composed of five Sitios namely Tacdangan, Naguilian Linasin, Tabalang, Turayok, and Abang Proper.
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the province of Abra at 8.43 a.m. local time on 27 July, triggering landslides and the collapse of structures. The tectonic earthquake’s epicenter was located in the town of Tayum, Abra (17.64°N, 120.63°E – 003 km N 45° W) at a depth of 17 kilometers, with the tremor felt in varying intensities across Northern Luzon including Metro Manila.
The 27 July 2022 M7.0 earthquake had a maximum ground shaking intensity of PEIS VII (Destructive) with some isolated areas experiencing PEIS VIII. A PEIS VII intensity is characterized by the following ( from Philvocs report):
1.Most people get frightened and run outdoors.
2. People find it difficult to stand on the upper floors.
3. Heavy objects and furniture overturn or topple.
4. Trees are shaken strongly.
5. Big church bells may ring.
6. Old or poorly-built structures suffer considerable damage.
7. Some well-built structures are slightly damaged. Some cracks may appear on dikes, fish ponds, road surfaces, or concrete hollow block walls.
8. Liquefaction effects (e.g. subsidence, sand boils, lateral spreads, etc.) in low-lying areas and landslides in mountains are observed near the epicenter.)
The Municipality of Bucay is one of the affected areas and it was further affected by 27 aftershocks with a recorded intensity of 5. For Brgy. Abang, their water system was heavily damaged by the earthquake.
As part of our relief and rehabilitation efforts, STPB – Cordillera visited Brgy. Abang to facilitate the repair of their water supply. Through the Center for Development Programs in the Cordillera (CDPC) and with your support, we provided the materials and food for work while labor is free thru the Bayanihan system of the community called TAGNAWA. We were also able to conduct this through coordination with the Abang Indigenous Peoples Development Organization (AIDPO).
The Work Continues!
As of October 2022, we are able to provide both relief and rehabilitation services to earthquake-affected barangays in Abra. 900 relief packs were delivered to an estimated 871 families in 3 barangays, while a waterworks rehabilitation effort was conducted in 1 barangay.
Our efforts are far from over, but we again extend our deepest gratitude to all your donations and support! For questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will keep you posted. Thank you!
