Ordinance on diabetes awareness and control implemented
BAGUIO CITY- Despite being in the forefront of activities against Covid-19, the Health Services Office (HSO) headed by Dr. Rowena Galpo also manages a diabetes awareness and control lead agency team.
In a legislative monitoring and evaluation status report last week, Ordinance 40, series of 2008, “Creating a diabetes awareness and control lead agency/team,” through the HSO is being implemented.
According to Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) Local Legislative Officers Protacio Tangalin and Michelle Dulay, letters and a copy of the ordinance were sent to the concerned offices as to their comments or recommendations.
These were then thoroughly synthesized as to implementation.
Implementing officer Dr. Galpo thus informed the evaluation group that regular activities were being conducted: distribution of Department of Health-issued Insulin and Metformin for diabetics; random blood sugar testing; counseling and health education orientation; lectures on diabetes awareness at health centers; and referral of diabetic patients to the diabetic club of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Hospital (BGHMC).
The maintenance of the Hypertension and Diabetes Registry in the health centers and promotion of health lifestyle program is also observed, she added. The project is for immediate attention, provision of maintenance medicines and assistance for diabetics living within the vicinity specially during emergencies.
During the annual celebration of Civil Service Commission month, diet counselling to diabetic patients are being done; as with the posting and distribution of Information Education Campaign (IEC) materials, public service announcements and radio programs during the observance of the Diabetes Awareness Month every November, Dr. Galpo revealed.
The use of traditional medicines for healthy living both in the rural and urban areas is also being explored, it was known.
Ordinances and resolutions are regularly monitored and evaluated by the SP staff. –juliegfianza
