Mayor reminds residents: “Tapat Mo, Linis Mo”
Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong reminded all residents of the Summer Capital to keep up to the “Tapat Mo, Linis Mo” ordinance after receiving pictures from a concerned citizen complaining of a creek full of trash within the jurisdiction of Teachers’ Camp and Cabinet Hill.
A joint ocular inspection led by the mayor was conducted on Thursday, 5 January 2023 with the City Environment and Parks Management Office, the General Services Office, the City Legal Office, the Environment Management Bureau of the Cordillera Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Baguio City Police Office and barangay officials among others.
The creek being complained traverses Purok 6 in Barangay Cabinet Hill to the Philippine Sports Commission at Teachers’ Camp and exiting at Sagudin River.
“Garbages are strewn everywhere by household residents,” the complaint received by the mayor stated.
The mayor called for behavioral change among residents to discipline themselves and clean-up their surroundings.
“Dapat lahat tayo nagtutulungan, hindi lang barangay officials. Nakakalungkot na lagging naglilinis ang gobyerno at barangay pero walang disiplina ang mga residente ay wala tayong patutunguhan. Nakakahiya na,” the mayor said.
He said it is about time that the city imposes stricter measures on residents throwing garbage by collecting fees if this is the only way to enforce self-discipline.
Nakakahiya na ang mga residente kahit kalat-kalat ng kanilang bakuran hindi man lang magawang magwalis at itapon ng maayos ang basura, ginamit pang basurahan ang creek,” the mayor whined adding this kind of attitude adds to urban decay.
For the part of barangays Teachers’ Camp and Cabinet Hill, they have been intensely conducting clean-up drives within their jurisdictions but the management of Teacher’s Camp disallows the barangay to some areas particularly where the residents are throwing their garbage directly to the creek.
Teachers’ Camp is within the management of the Department of Education and barangay officials are not consulted nor involved with structural developments within the area. – JMPS
