‘Gulayan sa Paaralan’ in city schools, pushed
Mayor Benjamin Magalong ratified city council resolution no. 561, series of 2022, urging all public and private schools in the Summer Capital to establish ‘Gulayan Sa Paaralan’ in their respective schools.
The approved measure was based on a similar proposal of Scout Official For A Day (SOFAD) councilor Ralph Gwyneth Sapdoy that was adopted during the SOFAD council session held on November 7, this year.
“Having a vegetable garden in educational institutions is an innovative way of teaching students to value the importance of being resourceful and innovative in food source and livelihood,” it stated.
The resolution added that “it adds beauty to the school and can serve as a source of livelihood especially to those who have a meager family income.”
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations defined the impact of urban gardening as “an industry that produces, processes and markets food and fuel, largely in response to the daily demand of consumers within a town, city or metropolis, on land and water dispersed throughout the urban and peri-urban area, applying intensive production methods, using and reusing natural resources and urban wastes, to yield a diversity of crops and livestock.” – Gaby B.
