Groundbreaking of P30-M athlete’s quarters at Athletic Bowl held
Mayor Benjamin Magalong, city administrator Bonifacio Dela Pena, City Buildings and Architecture (CBAO) head Archt. Johnny Degay and city sports office chief Gaudencio Gonzales led other officials and guests in the groundbreaking ceremonies for the construction of an Athletes’ Quarters and Isolation Facility at Athletic Bowl, Burnham Park, last Friday.
Arch. Cliff Ham of CBAO said construction of the P30-million multi-level structure will commence this month and will take around one year to complete by the winning contractor.
With funding taken from the city’s 2022 budget, the dormitory-type facility designed by CBAO will have 30 rooms and 120 beds including an alfresco dining area, lounge, and other amenities, he disclosed.
The Mayor assured that just like all the other projects implemented by his administration, no SOP or ‘under the table’ deal takes place and that all the money meant for a project goes entirely for its completion.
“We will definitely eradicate corruption here in Baguio since this is the bane of any local government unit aspiring to become economically resilient and stable,” he stressed.
For his part, Gonzales said the facility will definitely be a great boost to the city’s athletes and the entire sporting community as the Summer Capital is known as a haven for top-notch sportsmen and women.
Although primarily to be used as an athletes’ quarters, he added that it would also function as a coronavirus disease 2019 isolation facility if the need arises.
The activity ended with the Mayor leading in the ceremonial lowering of a time capsule at the site where the facility will soon rise. – Gaby B. Keith
