Four barangays chosen as MRF sites
BAGUIO CITY – (11 February 2021) – Four barangays have been chosen as recipients of a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) amounting to P600,000 each, according to General Services Office (GSO) department head Eugene Buyucan.
He disclosed this during the regular management committee meeting of local officials Tuesday at Baguio Convention Center led by Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
The barangays include Gibraltar, Irisan, Bakakeng Central and Guisad, Buyucan said, and were chosen by the Environmental Management Board-Cordillera office in coordination with the GSO.
He added that the project amounting to P2.4 million is funded by the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera and is currently undergoing the city’s bidding procedures.
Buyucan explained that the MRF has a building footprint of approximately 34 to 40 square meters and is designed by personnel of the City Buildings and Architecture Office under Archt. Johnny Degay.
A MRF is a solid-waste management area that processes recyclable materials (nabubulok o di-nabubulok) that would then be sold to manufacturers or other end-users.
Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of the Philippines calls for the establishment of a MRF in every barangay or cluster of barangays subject to guidelines and criteria pursuant to the Act.
The move is also in line with achieving one of the city’s 16-point strategic goal which is revitalizing the environment, Buyucan pointed out. – Gaby B. Keith
