Firm proposes solution to city’s solid waste woes
The current hauler of the city’s residual waste recently proposed a possible solution to the prevailing solid waste woes to help the farmers by maximizing the value of waste while minimizing environmental impact.
Metro Waste Corporation intends to use the whole-of-nation approach on waste management and regenerative agriculture to establish a permanent solution to the city’s solid waste problem, especially the disposal of the city’s residual waste.
The waste management coverage that will be employed by the company will include the sale of garbage bags to the residents, the establishment of a sorting facility and transfer station that will be located either in Pugo, La Union or in Sablan, Benguet, availability of waste bins, increase of waste collection equipment that will reduce the organic fraction by 50 percent, disposal of refuse derived fuel (RDF) and recyclables by 50 percent, residuals by 20 percent, put up of large-scale composting facility and the upcoming operation of the Urdaneta City engineered sanitary landfill.
On the waste management components for household storage, the company will be selling to the public kitchen waste bags priced at P15 per piece, residual waste bags priced at P85 per bag and recyclable bags which will be paid back to households by junk shops for the proper disposal of their segregated waste.
For waste management components on waste collection equipment, the firm will be making available waste compactors with bin lifters, waste collection trucks, waste compliant enforcers, hooklift trucks, waste bin collector trucks and wastewater collection.
For the waste management components on waste sorting facility, the company will be providing fixed bin lifters for semi-automated sorting facility and automated sorting and composting facility where a portion of the revenue from the waste recovered from the said facility shall be allocated for the education of the workers children.
On the composting aspect of waste management, Metro Waste will be providing waste shredders, window equipment and negative aeration system and biological odor filtration system.
The company has taken over the management and operation of the Urdaneta City engineered sanitary landfill which is expected to be operational before the year end serving as the final disposal site of the city’s residual waste.
On the wastewater treatment system, the company will be putting up an engineered soil matrix, custom water delivery system and engineered planting system for most effective treatment.
Phase 1 of the project involves the assured landfill capacity for the city’s residual waste, water quality monitoring equipment, waste sorting equipment, transfer station, composting facility, waste collection equipment; the second phase will involve the regenerative agriculture such as organic food, waste bag for food waste, organic farming and organic fertilizer while the third phase will involve waste elimination such as RDF, medical waste, heat for cold storage or drying, renewable energy, fly ash for cement factories and fill materials for reclamation projects. – Dexter A.
