Fashion, arts mark World Autism Awareness Day on April 2
A fashion and art show marked the celebration of World Autism Awareness Day in Baguio City on April 2 with the theme: “Transformation Toward A Neuro-Inclusive World For All.”
The activity is part of the Fashion Arts Autism Benefits (FAAB) initiative, run by the Autism Hearts Foundation (AHF) which aims to help people who are on the autism spectrum.
The activity aims to broaden the communication skills of individuals in the autism spectrum through self-expression, such as art therapy, which in turn enables them to transcend themselves as contributing members of society as they present their work to a wider audience.
In support of World Autism Awareness Day, Mayor Benjamin Magalong shares his heartwarming message with the audience. In his speech he said:
“On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, I stand before you with a message of hope and inclusivity. Autism is a condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide, and it is our responsibility as a society to ensure that they receive the love, care, and respect that they deserve.”
“We are aware that autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects an individual’s ability to communicate, socialize, and relate to others. However, we firmly believe that with the right interventions, support, and opportunities, individuals with autism can lead fulfilling lives and contribute positively to society,” he said.
He added, “I urge each and every one of you to join us in our efforts toward creating a more inclusive society. Let us pledge to be more understanding, accepting, and supportive of individuals with autism.”
In support of the group, the Camp John Hay Golf Club, Inc. donated 150,000 pesos for the FAAB leading the activity.
City Councilor Leandro Yangot also donated easels equipment and promised a new set of acrylic paint in support to the children and families of autism spectrum.
Yangot said the fashion and art show’s raised funds will be used to build an art gallery at the Baguio City National High School.
The fashion and art activity paved the way for two project beneficiaries to join a fashion and art display in the Guggenheim Museum in New York in April 2022 proving that anyone on the autism spectrum can go worldwide they just need a platform. – Joshua Walitang
