DepEd sees slight dip in Baguio’s elementary, secondary enrollees

A total of 93,183 learners have enrolled in the Summer Capital’s public and private Elementary, Junior High School (JHS), and Senior High School (SHS) educational institutions for School Year 2023 to 2024.

This is compared to 94,136 and 94,775 enrollees for School Years 2022 to 2023 and 2021 to 2022, respectively.

This was disclosed in a report of the Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Baguio under Superintendent Soraya Faculo during flag-raising rites at City Hall, September 18, led by Acting City Mayor Faustino Olowan.

For the current school year (2023-2024), the enrollment is broken down as follows: Elementary, 35,857 (public), 9,913 (private); JHS, 21,498 (public), 7,142 (private); and SHS, 6,903 (public), 11,845 (private).

As to readiness of the city’s elementary and secondary schools in terms of sufficiency of chairs, the report stated a ‘Ready’ rating of 96.46 percent in the Elementary division and a 97.80 percent ‘Ready’ rating in the Secondary division.

In the sufficiency of classrooms, the city’s elementary schools got a ‘Ready’ rating of 94.89 percent while a 97.89 percent ‘Ready’ rating was given the secondary learning institutions according to the DepEd Baguio report.

Earlier, Mayor Benjamin Magalong broached the possibility of using some of the more than 100 trees  felled by Super Typhoon ‘Egay’  as lumber to be converted into chairs or desks to the City Environment and Parks Management Office in coordination with the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources. 

These would then be donated to the DepEd for the use of learners in the city’s elementary and secondary schools. – Gaby B. Keith
