City’s farm tourism circuit on-going

Residents and visitors, mostly in small groups, have already experienced the Summer Capital’s Farm Tourism Circuit since its launching May 1 at Happy Hallow barangay as part of the city’s celebration of Urban Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month.

City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO) agriculturist II Marcelina Tabelin said the project is a collaborative effort between the Department of Tourism-Cordillera (DOT-CAR) and her office under Dr. Silardo Bested.

The Farm Tourism Circuit aims to promote and support farms and farmers in the City of Pines and provide experiential education to visitors and residents on their best agricultural practices, she explained.

Included in the circuit are permaculture, hydroponic farms and edible garden landscapes in Happy Hallow barangay; strawberry farms at Sto. Tomas barangay; rose gardens at Camp 7 barangay; farms in Irisan barangay that have received Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification; and more.

Tabelin disclosed that several of the farms have planted sunflowers and are waiting for their full bloom which will hopefully attract more residents and visitors to partake of the agri-tourism attraction.

She said the Farm Tourism Circuit has a targeted two-year timetable for it to be developed and reach its full potential.

Earlier, CVAO agriculturist I Vincent Chacapna revealed that the program will  become an integral part of the DOT-CAR’s ongoing agri-tourism campaign that provides farming-related experiences to be enjoyed on a farm or other agricultural setting for entertainment or educational purposes.

The Farm Tourism Circuit is also in line with the city government’s 16-point core agenda that includes responsible tourism, strengthened livelihood and entrepreneurial services, and others.

The launching was led by then councilor Philian Weygan-Allan, chair of the city council’s committee on market, trade, commerce and agriculture; DOT-CAR Dir. Jovy Ganongan; CVAO head Bested, Happy Hallow barangay officials and other guests.

Those interested to experience the Farm Tourism Circuit can coordinate with the CVAO at Slaughterhouse Compound or call (074) 443-5332, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. – Gaby B. Keith
