City launches ‘Baguio Coffee and Rabbit Food Fest’ on May 27

The city government through the City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO).will showcase rabbit and coffee fare in the ‘Baguio Coffee and Rabbit Food Fest’ from May 27 to June 3 at the Igorot Garden.

CVAO head Dr. Silardo Bested said the activity aims to promote Baguio Arabica coffee and rabbit meat, two of the growing industries in the city.

He said the festival is part of the Summer Capital’s celebration of Urban Farmers  and Fisherfolks Month pursuant to city ordinance no. 35, series of 2018, “Institutionalizing the Conduct of Urban Farmers and Fisherfolks  Month Celebration every May of every Year in the City of Baguio and providing funds thereof.”

CVAO Agriculturist I Vincent Aaron Chacapna said that no entrance fee will be collected and the public can purchase the products of the two local Arabica coffee growers and four rabbit producers who have agreed to join the food fest so far.

A coffee aficionado describes Arabica coffee as “a very mellow and mild coffee. It’s also got only half the caffeine of Robusta beans, but double the amount of natural sugars and fats, which help develop those flavors Arabica is famous for.”

As for rabbit meat, Bested claimed that according to nutritionists and other health experts, it has very low cholesterol content as compared to that of most livestock.

Earlier, he disclosed that the city government’s rabbit dispersal project, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture who provided the funds,  is  ‘alive and hopping’ with around 1,800 of the cute and furry creatures  distributed to interested residents.
