BAGUIO CITY – Members of the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club (BCBC) received vital training in basic life support (BSL) and first aid on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 held at Dumol Hall in the BENECO headquarters on South Drive.
Under the adept leadership of Jordan R. Tablac, the PNP Press Corps took the initiative to organize the training, extending collaboration with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) – La Trinidad, Benguet.
Recognizing the crucial role media professionals play as first responders during calamities and accidents, Tablac emphasized the importance of equipping journalists with basic life support skills.
He highlighted that although media practitioners are not trained as emergency respondents, their presence at such critical incidents necessitates them having knowledge in basic life support.
Tablac further emphasized that media practitioners possess the potential to save lives with the proper training.
“By being knowledgeable in basic life support, we can provide immediate assistance until professional help arrives and save lives,” Tablac said.
The BFP trainers encouraged the media practitioners to actively participate in comprehensive training, aiming to enhance their understanding of basic life support and foster greater confidence in applying their skills.
BFP FO3 Michael Davis R. Rapayrapay stressed that BSL skills are valuable assets that require regular practice and improvement to ensure they remain effective.
“We strongly suggest our media partners to enhance their skills by continuously putting it into practice, as these skills are diminishing assets, pag hindi natin nagagamit, nawawala, nakakalimutan. By honing their skills and gaining confidence through training, our media partners can effectively apply their knowledge in real-life situations encountered in the field,” FO3 Rapayrapay said.
Furthermore, BFP FO2 Brail V. Taluyo underscored the significance of self-assessment before providing assistance during emergency situations.
This precautionary step ensures that well-intentioned efforts do not inadvertently harm or impede the purpose of providing aid to the victims.
“Mahalaga na handa po ang ating sarili para makasiguro tayo na hindi lalong malagay sa alanganin ang buhay na ating sinusubukang sagipin,” FO2 Taluyo said.
(Ensuring our preparedness is vital, as it guarantees that the lives we strive to save are not exposed to further danger or risks.)
The training session served as an opportunity for BCBC members to acquire essential life-saving skills, reinforcing their commitment to providing prompt and valuable assistance during emergencies.
With their enhanced expertise in basic life support and first aid, these media professionals are better equipped to handle critical situations and contribute to the overall safety and well-being of the community they serve. ### Merriam del Rosario
