Baguio barangays told to establish reading centers

City officials urged all the one hundred twenty-eight barangays to establish and consistently maintain their barangay reading centers.
Under Resolution No. 516, series of 2022, local legislators stated that with the current brand of the city, it is proper to give support to its endeavors relating to the further development and upliftment of its citizens, especially in the field of literacy or education.
During the Senior Citizens Officials for a Day (SCOFAD) session held on October 17, 2022, the SCOFAD council adopted the proposal of SCOFAD Councilor Thelma S. Kim which urged all barangays in the city to establish and consistently maintain their barangay reading centers.
The body pointed out that the State affirms its commitment to human development by prioritizing education, science and technology, arts, culture and sports to foster patriotism and nationalism, accelerate social progress and promote total human liberation and development.
Republic Act (RA) 7743 aims to promote the moral and intellectual well being of the people; elevate the literacy level of every Filipino to the end the illiteracy will be eradicated by the end of the century; and recognize the vital role of knowledge and information in nation building.
Baguio is known as the citadel of education of the north and this branding is manifested by the presence of high-caliber educators as one of the reasons why there is a growing number of students coming from different places enrolled in the city, cemented by highly desirable and performing professional graduates that the city produces through the years. – Dexter A.
