City appreciates local publication

City officials recently extended their profoundest appreciation and acknowledgement of the local government to the Baguio Midland Courier as its threads the last chapter of its 77 years of fair, fearless, friendly and free writing, upholding the highest ethics of journalism and recognizing its role as the 4th state of democracy in print media, earning the respect of fellow journalists and admiration of the people.

In a resolution authored by Councilors Betty Lourdes F. Tabanda and Maria Mylen Victoria G. Yaranon, local legislators stated that the local publication holds a special place in the hearts and minds of many, including the local government, for empowering the people through its unbiased reporting and informative articles, presenting the true picture of the events and issues.

The council expressed its deep sadness when the said publication announced that it shall cease publication and release its final issues on July 7, 14 and 21, 2024.

The community paper under the Hamada Printers and Publishers Corporation was founded in July 1947 with its first issue released on July 28, 1947.

To date, the local paper has been the platform of relevant news and informative articles from both the local and regional domains.

The council claimed that the local newspaper served as a platform of community engagements where opinions were respected, milestones were celebrated, and unbiased commentaries were delivered and issues were expounded within the comprehension of its readers.

Earlier the management of the publication announced that the difficult decision to close down and cease operation was because โ€˜despite its efforts, it has not been spared from the global trend of newspapers facing unprecedented challenges, leading to the closure of many venerable publications.โ€™

Copies of the approved resolution will be transmitted to the management of the local publication for information, guidance, ready reference and further needed action. Dexter A. See
