Barangays told to provide first aid kits for seniors

City officials recently requested the city’s barangays to provide appropriate first aid kits in the identified wellness areas in their respective barangay halls or senior citizen centers for the use of senior citizens.

Under Resolution No. 677, series of 2023, local legislators stated that the presence of wellness areas in the different barangay halls or senior citizens centers in the city promotes and encourage the elderly to be actively involved in physical activities which contribute to overall physical and mental health, thus, contributing to preventing and managing diseases and other illnesses and reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety.

During the Senior Citizens officials For-A-Day (SCOFAD) session held last October 9, 2023, the SCOFAD Council adopted the proposal of Councilor Elizabeth N. Aquino that requested the city’s barangays to provide appropriate first aid kits and identify a wellness area in their respective barangay halls or senior citizen centers for the senior citizens.

The council claimed that the majority of the senior citizens associations hold office in the barangay halls, except for a few that were fortunate to have constructed their respective barangay senior citizens center.

The body added that because of their active involvement and participation in barangay activities, first aid kits must be provided in the wellness area duly identified to be able to immediately respond to medical emergencies that may transpire involving senior citizens and other barangay residents needing help.

Further, the council stipulated that the wellness area that had been identified can be used by the senior citizens for their physical and emotional engagements such as exercise or sumba, for camaraderie and to be able to spend quality time with fellow elderly.

Copies of the approved resolution will be transmitted to the city’s barangays for their information, guidance, ready reference and further needed action.

Moreover, the council emphasized that funding for the said endeavor will be sourced from the senior citizens fund or any available funding source from the barangays. – Dexter A. See
