Catholic nun is city’s newest centenarian

Cosmedin R. Gorospe also known as Sr. Mary Vitalis R. Gorospe, RSG is the city’s latest centenarian.

She was born on December 12, 1923 and reared in Sta. Catalina, Ilocos Sur.  She described her birthplace where she spent her childhood and girlhood as an obscure little town but it was there where she experienced peace, joy and love from her family, neighborhood, and the whole community.

Her parents had a deep Catholic faith that also exposed her to the foreign missionaries. Her late elder brother is also a priest while the other brother who is a lawyer resides in the USA with his family.

On September 8, 1955, Ms. Gorospe finally a professed sister had her first ministry through teaching a group of mothers and children to their residences and schools within Metro Manila and the neighboring provinces for about twenty years.

In the wake of the Martial Law, she was challenged to minister to wider communities of the Cagayan Valley particularly in Isabela, Pangasinan, Mindanao area, and  Cordillera Administrative Region.

Later, she accepted voluntary work in Kenya, Africa until she returned back here to the City of Baguio where she continued the management of the Good Shepherd Convent at Mines View, Baguio City.  She is now being cared for by her co-sisters due to her health status.

As one of the centenarian recipients of Baguio City, she received a total amount of P120,000 — P20,000 from the city government by virtue of Resolution No. 84-2019 and P100,000 from the DSWD National Office through DSWD-CAR per RA. 10868.

She also received a letter of felicitations from His Excellency, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. – Joan Astudillo/Ana P. Codley-OCSWDO
