Majority of solo parents in Baguio are females
More than 91 percent of Baguio City’s new solo parent ID holders last year and more than 94 percent of those who renewed their IDs are females based on the record of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
CSWDO Gender and Equality Focal Person Myrna Valencerina presented the 2022 solo parent ID data in a press conference on March 8, 2023 coinciding with the celebration of International Women’s Day.
In the CSWDO report, a total of 859 new applicants were issued solo parent ID last year wherein 789 are females while 69 are males.
Of the total, 302 female solo parents are living below the poverty threshold while 487 are above the poverty threshold. Meantime, 27 male solo parents are living below the poverty threshold while 42 are above the poverty threshold.
Based on the CSWDO data, eight are legally separated; 168 are widow/widower; 179 are married; and, 503 or majority of the new solo parents are single.
Aside from the new solo parents, a total of 527 renewed their ID last year wherein 497 are females while 29 are males. Eight are legally separated; 108 are widow/widower; 147 are married; and, majority or 291 are single.
Valencerina said these numbers are not meant to stereotype women when it comes to solo parents but should be considered when it comes to preparation of plans and programs relative to gender and equality.
Valencerina explained that the solo parent ID is only valid for a year and is subject to renewal if the holder still meets the qualifications set forth under the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act passed last year which grants more benefits to single parents.
Among the assistance and interventions extended by the CSWDO to the increasing number of solo parents registering with their office include values formation trainings, livelihood trainings, skills trainings and other programs, projects and activities that are geared towards advancing their present condition.
Solo parents that are not yet registered should visit their barangays or the CSWDO for the requirements on registration and be oriented on their rightful benefits. – JMPS
