Support to school-based cultural groups pushed

City officials earnestly requested the Department of Education (DepEd) to support school-based cultural groups in the elementary and secondary levels in the city.

Under Resolution No. 560, series of 2022, city legislators stated that the passage of the measure aims to continuously instill cultural appreciation and literacy to students as part of their identity as bonafide residents of the city.

During the Scout Officials for A Day (SOFAD) regular session held on November 7, 2022, the SOFAD Council adopted the proposal of SOFAD Councilor Henna Dalen A. Celino which earnestly requested the Department of Education to support school-based cultural groups in the elementary and secondary schools in the city.

Under Article 2, Section 17, of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the State shall give priority to education, science and technology, arts, culture, and sports to foster patriotism and nationalism, accelerate social progress, and promote total human liberation and development.

The council disclosed that one of the present administration’s core agenda is to enliven culture, arts and heritage as an effective way to promote sustainability and people empowerment through culturally-rooted policies, systems and practices strengthened by creative means and approaches.

As part of the Cordillera region and a culture-rich place, the body claimed that the city maintains its indigenous ways of life through the promotion of its cultures to the young generations, especially to the elementary and high school students.

The council encouraged the education sector to give importance to school-based cultural groups, especially in the provision of seminars, and workshops on the indigenous knowledge, systems and practices, traditional dances, among others. – Dexter A. See
