BAGUIO CITY – The search is on for the best vloggers who share their travel experiences in destinations all over the Cordillera Region.
The Department of Tourism – Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR) launched on Friday, September 9, 2022, the “Cordillera Experience Travel Vlog Competition” aiming to maximize the growing number of content creators or vloggers to share their experiences in the region to the world.
DOT-CAR Regional Director Jovi A. Ganongan said the department wants to capitalize on the phenomenal behaviors of influencers as well as amateur vloggers and their strategies of depicting real and in-depth experiences as a platform to promote what the region has to offer.
The director said they want visitors to endorse the region, its natural beauty, the food and delicacies, the activities, as well as the culture and its history through their testimonials.
“We want people to talk about the Cordilleras and endorse it to their spheres of influence, all walks of life,” Ganongan said.
For his part, Baguio City Tourism Officer Aloysius “Alec” C. Mapalo said that vlogging has become a part of the popular culture and that there are a lot of stories that sometimes people don’t realize and see but can be featured in these vlogs.
Mapalo said they want tourists to experience something new and rediscover new attractions like the newly rehabilitated Baguio Botanical Garden as well as attractions initiated by the private sector, like the Mirador Ecopark of the Jesuits Retreat House and the Igorot Stone Kingdom owned and designed by public works contractor Pio Velasco.
Mapalo also said that in the case of Baguio City which is already a popular tourist destination, they want to see in the vloggers’ content a different angle of tourism experience where tourists can help promote responsible traveling, the respect of culture, the local products being patronized, and how the environment is being protected, among others.
“Responsible traveling has been a problem before the pandemic, and now it’s starting to come out again. While we saw the positive change in attitude and culture of travelers, it [the problem] is starting to proliferate again,” Mapalo said.
According to Mapalo, Baguio City is one of the first locations in the country that opened for domestic tourism.
Mapalo said that Baguio City caters to an accumulated average of almost 50 thousand tourist arrivals per week from June to August this year and about 20 to 25 thousand on average in a day.
