25 construction workers to undergo TESDA training
The local government will be forging an agreement with the Cordillera office of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) for the conduct of a 25-day scholarship training for selected construction workers from the different construction firms in the city to enhance their skills and knowledge in their respective jobs.
City Planning Officer Arch. Donna Tabangin said that the decision to mandate construction workers to undergo the appropriate training construction facilitated by TESDA was a recommendation from the city’s Project Monitoring Committee (PMC) where it was found out during the conduct of project inspections that many of the workers do not seem to be trained for the work that they are doing.
She added that the city envisions having a building academy but for now, it will start with TESDA scholarships because the said agency is offering training on construction such as masonry, plumbing among others.
Under the proposed agreement, TESDA will provide a 25-day training for selected workers from the different construction companies operating in the city; it will also provide a P160 daily allowance to the scholars during the duration of the said training; it will issue a National Certificate (NC) 1 for the qualified trainees and that it will also determine of the scholars who complete the training will be qualified to be issued NC 2 and it will provide the list of suppliers where the purchase of materials and tool kits could be made.
On the part of the city, the local government will be in charge of selecting and endorsing to TESDA the qualified applicants for the said training; the city will identify the practical in site training areas for the scholars; the city will discuss with the contractors that the latter will shoulder the daily wages of their workers who will be undergoing the training and that the appropriate project proposal shall be prepared by the city for the purchase of the necessary tool kits that will be given to the scholars after the completion of the said training.
Initially, the deadline for the filing of applications of qualified laborers was scheduled for May 3, 2024 but the same was extended for one week upon the request of contractors as most of them are still determining the workers who will be undergoing the said training.
After the training on masonry, the city and TESDA-CAR will be conducting similar training on plumbing, carpentry among others for construction workers to help in enhancing their skills and knowledge on their work. – Dexter A. See
