In its ongoing mission to promote environmental sustainability and address Baguioโs biodegradable waste management challenges, the Baguio Tourism Council (BTC), in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA), launched the latest leg of the Greensoil Venture in Bayan Park Village on February 14, 2025.
Led by BTC Chairperson Gladys Vergara, the event gathered 38 community participants, with Sangguniang Barangay member Elenita Andrada and Angeline Nejal spearheading local engagement efforts. Department of Agriculture representative Mr. Zymerson Bangcado conducted an insightful discussion on the benefits and proper application of Trichoderma in composting. Trichoderma, a composting reagent that speeds up decomposition while reducing odors, is key to making composting more accessible to urban households.
As part of the initiative, attendees received free Trichoderma samples to help them kickstart their own composting projects. This distribution aligns with BTCโs goal to empower households and barangays to transform biodegradable waste into fertile compost soil, which can be used in home gardens or sold for added income.
โBaguio is facing a perennial garbage problem, and its our obligation to help address this burden,โ said BTC Chairman Gladys Vergaara. โProper waste segregation is important, but we also need to initiate and practice composting at home. The Greensoil Venture allows households to turn waste into valuable compost, creating a win-win solution for both the environment and the community,โ
BTCโs Greensoil Venture has expanded across several barangays, fostering increased community participation. The initiativeโs December 2024 soft launch saw participation from womenโs groups in P. Burgos Barangay, with attendees receiving starter kits, composting bins, and pechay seeds to promote backyard gardening. Additional workshops and support were also provided in Upper QM Barangay.
This expansion in Bayan Park Village marks another step toward BTCโs vision of a greener Baguio. Future plans aim to reach even more barangays, equipping communities with sustainable waste management tools to support environmental stewardship. (PR)
